What is an Actor's Green Room?

Writer: Dylan DayDylan Day

At the beginning of February I worked on a short film in Huddersfield; the production team were extremely professional and treated us actors like we were a protected species. We were fed well, chauffeured, and we were even asked what refreshments we wanted in our "Green Room." If you've ever been on a film set or backstage at a theatre, you’ve probably heard the term Green Room. But what is a Green Room, and why does it matter in the world of acting?

The Definition of a Green Room

A Green Room is a designated waiting area for performers before they go on stage or set - like a dressing room (although it isn't a space to get changed in.) It’s where actors, musicians, and other talent can relax, rehearse, or mentally prepare for their performance. Despite its name, a green room isn’t always green—its origins are debated, but some believe it comes from old theatre traditions where rooms were painted green to be easy on the eyes.

The Purpose of a Green Room

Green rooms serve as a sanctuary for actors. Whether it’s on a Hollywood soundstage, a TV studio, or a live theatre venue, these rooms provide a quiet, controlled environment to help performers stay focused. Some are luxurious, with snacks, comfortable seating, and entertainment, while others are just a simple space with a couch and a mirror.

In the end, the production in Huddersfield couldn't provide a separate space for us actors, but we found solace in the main filming room (a classroom.) I preferred this anyway, as I found the hierarchy created by the production team's treatment of me uncomfortable - in that, I was treated like someone of more value than them, and I am much more used to just being "equal" with a team and given zero preferential treatment.

Refreshments

You hear of actors who ask for ludicrous things in their Green Rooms or dressing rooms, such as cool water that must be at a precise temperature, and these spaces create entitlement from certain performers. When I was asked if I required any refreshment, I was surprised by the question (which I had never been asked before) and toyed between saying "I'm fine" or asking for something to show confidence. I concluded by asking for grapes - and it became a running joke between myself and the production team.

I couldn't advise whether it's best to ask for something or nothing. The key is not taking yourself seriously, and then both yourself and the production team can feel respected.

Why Production Teams Treat Actors Like They're Fragile

In the entertainment industry, actors are often treated as delicate commodities, and the actor's Green Room is an extension of that. Production teams go to great lengths to ensure actors feel comfortable, sometimes to the point of extreme pampering. This treatment comes from a mix of necessity and tradition:

  • Mental Preparation: Performing requires intense focus, and a green room offers a space free from distractions.

  • Stress Management: Acting can be high-pressure, and a relaxed actor gives a better performance.

  • Preventing Burnout: Long hours on set can be exhausting, so actors are given downtime to recharge.

  • Avoiding Overexposure: Directors and producers want actors fresh for the camera, not overwhelmed by the chaos of the set.

Some actors appreciate this special treatment, while others find it unnecessary - like me; I also recognise the double-standards where the production team are otherwise treated worse than the performers (not that this happened on the Huddersfield production: everyone there was brilliant.) Either way, the Green Room remains a vital part of the production process, ensuring performers are ready when the cameras roll or the curtains rise.

Final Thoughts

So, what is a green room? It’s more than just a waiting area—it’s a crucial part of an actor’s workflow, designed to maintain focus and energy. Whether you see it as a luxury or a necessity, the green room is here to stay, keeping actors at their best for every performance.
